Well, folks, it’s apparently spring in the UP!

It went from -20 to 50 almost over night–and it’s stayed that way! I was expecting to be wading through snow for another month, but I’ll certainly take it.  I was out walking my dog in a tee shirt! And snow still up to my calves, of course.

Dog loved it, though, since warm snow is the best for snowballs.

This is the face he makes when I say the word “snowballs”

And, hey, it’s Monday again! That means it’s time for

Michigan Made Monday!

Featuring:

We are happy to share that Revisions Design Studio is opening a brick-and-mortar store in Downtown Marquette this week!

Michele is a native of the Upper Peninsula and a graduate of Northern Michigan University’s Ceramics program in the College of Art and Design. She started working on building her business soon after graduating from NMU and her home-grown business has exploded since the official opening in 2008.

Revisions focuses on taking old ideas and revitalizing them, whether casting old glassware into new porcelain holders, bending antique spoons into jewelry, or using old farming implements to create a beautiful space with her new Urban Analog lighting line.

Do these look familiar? One of Revisions’ most well-known pieces are her porcelain eggshell candles and planters.

The Beth Millner family has a long-standing connection with Revisions–Janna worked with Michele when Revisions was just a small studio out in Gwinn, and Beth went to school with the Revisions studio technician, Melinda!

 It’s Janna!

Revisions has work in stores worldwide and has fulfilled wholesale orders for such major retailers as Target, her work has been featured on the Today Show, and Michele has been spotlighted by Etsy as a featured seller.  Wow!

Despite major success, Michele is determined to keep her business local and handmade, though she has faced major pressure to outsource production overseas to increase her profit and output.  For Michele, it’s about the design, it’s about creation, and it’s about making a difference in her community.

Michele’s production and design studio is located in the old Gossard building in Ishpeming, Michigan, about 20 minutes outside of Marquette.  For those of you who are unfamiliar, the Gossard building was a women’s undergarment factory in the 1920’s!

 (history)   (revised)

We are so excited to welcome Revisions Design to downtown Marquette.  Her new storefront is located at 219 West Washington Streer, the old Farmer Q’s storefront. Stop on in next time you’re downtown between 11am and 5pm and take a look!

Enjoy the Melt,

Andrea

Michigan Made Monday! Featuring: Dalman Pottery!

Dalman Pottery!

Ryan Dalman has been accused of creating Off-Grid Magic at The Halfway.

 (I believe it)

Out in the woods on a bumpy road that follows the shore of Lake Superior, from Marquette to Big Bay, there is a small community of folks (at the halfway point on 550) who believe that sustainable living is not only attainable but enjoyable. Ryan Dalman and his family belong to this group of crazy Yooper hippies who think that real change is possible.  The Dalman Pottery Farm is a testament to this intertwining of working, life., and working art.

Ryan’s studio (and house) is entirely off-the-grid.  He uses a kick-wheel (no electricity needed) and a hand-built wood-fired kiln…even the wood to fire the kiln is reclaimed!

In Ryan’s own words:

“The goal is to live lightly, thoughtfully and simply while paying more attention to the importance of quality and comfort in the objects we use daily in our homes.”

(the inside of a pre-fire kin)

A graduate of Northern Michigan University’s ceramics program, Dalman Pottery provides hand-made mugs for the immensely popular Marquette brewery/hangout, Black Rocks Brewery.  If you are a lucky scamp, you might have a mug with your name on it, made by Ryan Dalman, hanging in the Black Rocks’ upper room.

He also provides mugs at Dark Horse Brewery in Marshall, Michigan! If you have the chance to go, Ryan Dalman has made more than 3,000 mugs for the Mug Club there.

Although famous for them, Dalman is certainly not limited to mug-making. He also makes platters, bowls, cookie jars, fermentation crocks…you name it.

We’re grateful to have Ryan Dalman around as a member of our community and a true example of what it means to be Michigan Made!

Hopes of sunshine, warmth, and spring to you and yours,

Andrea

Michigan Made Monday! Featuring the Jampot and Fitzgerald’s in the Keweenaw!

Well, I’m dreaming of spring.

I love winter, don’t get me wrong, but man, it’s cold.  So, today, we’re going to Think Spring and take a trip to the Last Place on Earth–up to the Keweenaw Peninsula, to two of the most awesome fooderies around, that are only open during the warm months.

First, there’s the Jampot.

This tiny little building houses a great treasure: delightful jams, confections, preserves, breads, fruitcakes…all made with organic and locally sourced and often wild-foraged ingredients from the woods surrounding–all made as a meditation and for the glory of God by monks of the Byzantine Rite.

In their own words,

“In our skete at Jacob’s Falls, on the shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, we devote ourselves to a common life of prayer and work for the praise, love, and service of God and for the upbuilding of His Kingdom through the Arts.”

And, truly, you’ve never tasted anything like the offerings of the monks at the Jampot.  The care and devotion is tasted in every bite, and the warmth and welcome of the monks is as sweet as their thimbleberry jam.

The skete at Jacob’s Falls also hosts a guest house that is open for individuals to use as a retreat center for personal reflection, promotion of arts, and meditation in the middle of the quiet woods.

Open from the beginning of May through Mid-October, this monastic communities’ summer fare is worth the trip!  And I personally am looking forward to heading that way in the melt of spring.

Next, let’s talk about Fitzgerald’s–the restaurant with the best craft beer and whisky selection in the UP!  Not to mention incredible food, and comfortable lodging, right on the shore of Lake Superior.

Some might consider Keweenaw County to be “The Last Place on Earth” with only a handful of year-round residents and essentially only summer commerce–but Fitzgerald’s is looking to turn that around.

Two friends and natives of Eagle River saw one of their favorite local landmarks closing, and decided to not only save it, but to truly study what we were doing, and I mean, REALLY nerd out about craft beer, whisky, and barbecue, and to put Eagle River on the map as a destination for Yoopers and visitors to find world-class food and beverages.

Formerly known as the Swank Beach Resort, the Eagle River Inn was owned at one time by a former Special Forces soldier who had served in Vietnam, and who had come to Eagle harbor to seek peace, and found it.  At one point, La Motte had a wolf as a regular patron of the bar.

The current owners purchased the Inn and Restaurant in 2007 and haven’t changed much of it physically, but the atmosphere has become one of relaxed class.  They collaborated with the Keweenaw Brewing Company to make the first brewery-restaurant collaboration beer, and have more than 100 fine whiskies on hand.

Comfortable upscale dining for the Foodies of the UP, it’s a welcome sight when getting back from a long hike in the remote woods, or after an excellent day of mountain biking.  This classic Michigan Made restaurant is definitely one of the first places that I am looking forward to visiting on my first trip to the Keweenaw for this springs’ mountain biking season!

Sending warm, blooming-flower filled thoughts to you and yours,

Andrea

Michigan Made Monday Featuring Yooper Steez

Michigan Made Monday!

Featuring:  Yooper Steez!

These folks are on a mission to make sure the world gets to know the beauty of the UP and to make sure Yoopers can know the enjoyment of a comfy t-shirt that brings back great memories

According to the YS website, Justin “Bugsy” Sailor started Yooper Steez after embarking on a 50-state tour of the US.  When he returned, he found himself looking through and reliving memories of his road trip via the many t-shirts he’d acquired–but there was no such UP t-shirt that he wore during his trip…

Enter Yooper Steez! A creative site that celebrates the UP, supports the community, and makes really great t-shirts!

  • The company behind Plaidurday–the official worldwide celebration of perpendicular stripes and Yooper Traditional Garb, celebrated annually on the first Friday of October! One of our favorite holidays at the shop 🙂

  • And my personal favorite!  You can check out a  map of where Yoopers have worn their tees…If you’ve got one of these great steezy shirts, take a picture on your adventures and post it!

Looks like we’ve managed to get to Antarctica but not New Zealand.  Come on, Yoopers! Let’s get traveling!

You can find Yooper Steez here or on Facebook and Twitter!

Happy Michigan Made Monday!

Snowy happy thoughts to you,

Andrea

Sled Dogs, A Blizzard, and Valentine’s Day

I went to sleep thinking that I was going to take my dog on a nice run before going to work today.

I woke up to my phone giving me a weather alert as my morning music was starting…

!Blizzard Warning! Actual temperature +5 F, feels like -20 F, wind gusts up to 20MPH.

HA! No running for Mr. Patch this morning, even if he does give me this face:

(When my alarm goes off, he jumps on me to let me know it’s time to run)

(Even when I don’t feel like running at 7:30, he’s pretty hard to resist. Look at that face.)

The good news is:

We live in the UP.  We’re used to this. This Is Winter.  We celebrate this here.

Speaking of Celebrating Winter in the UP!!!!

Toady, for those who aren’t blessed to be living in the Queen City, is the UP 200, Midnight Run, and Jack Pine 30 Sled Dog Races.  The UP 200 celebrated 25 years of racing this year!

This exciting race is a qualifier for the Iditarod that is a favorite among mushers for the challenging terrain, cheering crowds, and warm welcome that Yoopers give. This is one of my favorite events of the year! The city brings back the snow they’ve recently removed from Washington Street (downtown’s main drag), local businesses stay open late and make huge amounts of hot cocoa, and the city stays packed with people late into the evening, even in the middle of blizzards!

…Not to mention all the folks who come into town to cheer on the dogs, eat a nice dinner on Valentine’s Day, buy locally handmade jewelry for their sweeties…

Thank you to all of those who have made this weekend a busy, busy success at the shop! The Yooper Love Rocks and Woodland Love Pendants have been a big hit so far…

The good news for you procrastinators is that we will be open tomorrow–on Valentine’s Day itself!–from 11am until 5pm, if you weren’t able to get into the shop during the week, we’re still here for you!

We’re including a card and some lovely dark chocolate with the purchase of any of our Valentine’s day collection, one stop shopping for those of you who are going to be scrambling for a gift before dinner!

Heart Card Chocolate Yay!

Happy Weekend Everybody!

Charms and Chains

Hello again! This is Laurel and I am here to talk to you about chains. Making them, and what one to choose for your pendant or charm! Starting with the basics the parts connecting that make up a chain are called links. At Beth Millner Jewelry we have a number of chains available for purchase, here… Some chains are pre made and some handmade in the studio. The more intricate tiny chains are made by machines able to solder and put all the little bits together much more efficiently than my hands ever could.

Choosing the right chain for your piece is important so that it is showcased nicely and will hold up to wear and tear as you enjoy it. The more delicate fine chains go well with small charms and pendants while a broad chunky chain can be worn with pendant or as a piece on its own.

Hand Made Chain!

Chain making is something I began to love early in my education at NMU. I find it so satisfying as each link successfully soldered in its place joins the “ranks” with the others slowly but surely forming into a length, elegant and strong. In creating hand formed chain I deem it important to check the strength and quality of each link. For me it is mesmerizing to watch it grow and expand in length. I feel most relaxed in the studio when making chain. As with much in life taking it one link at a time is important.

charms

This holiday season is fast upon us and we have been “elving” away in the studio at Beth Millner Jewelry. Much to our satisfaction and hopefully your admiration we have developed a new and soon to be revealed charm bracelet design! To add to the hand-made-in-studio sterling silver chain are a number of charms that Beth has designed. A great gift idea for a loved-one, this is a unique eco friendly gift that can continue to be added to over the years and special occasions! We will keep you updated with photos and news on this exciting new addition to the Beth Millner Jewelry collection!
