I have been painting!

Okay, so I have made a lot of jewelry over the past few years, probably 1000’s of pieces and while I love it, I have been yearning for the unconstrained freedom of painting and the use of colors. Jewelry making is more planned and technical for me.  I have to make the design so it can be worn and be durable.  Painting is such a different way to express myself, I really enjoy losing track of time and mixing paints.

I have been really obsessed with owls lately.  I enjoy how the eyes define who they are as a creature, but then the rest can be up to my own colorful interpretation of what an owl is supposed to look like!

I have included the words, “Now What?” in many of these pieces.  I have seen so many situations that point fingers at problems or a potential bad outcome, and my question to that is, Now What? I believe the answer to this is not about pointing at negative and seemingly hopeless potential outcomes. It is about now what can we do now, in the moment, Now What?

These paintings are currently not for sale, I am just having fun making some art!

So, I present to you some of my owl paintings.

Buying a Home.

The leaves are just beginning to change here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  My garden has not frosted yet and we picked a few awesome tomatoes yesterday.  I really feel that autumn is a huge transition time for me and this year will be one of the larger transitions I have made.

Mike, my partner and I are purchasing a home!  We found a great spot with a few wooded acres and it is close to town.  We are very, very excited to be moving into this new home.  It needs some repairs including a couple of major ones, but no surprises since we made the decision to purchase. Luckily Mike is a licensed contractor and can do the work.

I will be moving my studio again!  As many of you know,  I have had a studio in many places.  I started my business in 2007, when Mike and I were living in a small home, a really small home 18′ X 18 ‘ total.  I had a little spot next to the front door where I started making my creations.

We moved from this house in 2008 just after I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in May of 2008.  It was a great little house to live in and work from, but we wanted a taste of living a down-to-earth lifestyle.

We wanted to live off of solar panels, bathe in a river and use what was just there.  I loved living in the woods!  We had rented out a sweet little cabin, which was almost the same size as the house we lived in (pictured above).  The cabin was a timber frame log home, we heated and cooked with wood, walked barefoot and made some really amazing life long friends.  In October of 2008, we decided it was time for an epic journey.

Mike and I decided to go on a voyage around the country.  We ended up convincing our friends Traci and Robel to do the same and we had the most amazing journey, The Art Show Tour 2009.

Here are some of the images of the studios I set up while traveling around the US and a couple of other candid shots.  The image to the right is my studio outside at Traci’s dads house in Cowpens, SC.

After our epic journey around the country, we decided to move back into the cabin.  Once the fall hit, I really got the itch to move into town, downtown Marquette.  We rented a 3 bedroom apartment in October of 2009 and have been living here for just about a year.  Here is a photo of my current studio 2010 taken just a few days ago.

My next studio is bound to be another adventure, but I am looking forward to settling into a place.  Each time I set up shop, it gets a little more organized and efficient.  We should be moving into our new home at the end of October, just in time for Halloween and Mike’s Birthday!  I will be sure to post pictures of the new place.

I am currently running a promotion until the end of September where purchases over $100 in my Etsy shop get a FREE $50 gift certificate.  I am using the promotion to help us transition into our new home and as a thank you to all of my loyal customers!

Busiest Summer Ever!

Well I have had a very busy summer, I just finished my last two shows of the season and now I am taking a bit of a break, or at least slowing down.  I had 5 best shows over the summer meaning that 5 shows beat my top show of last summer.

My sales have more than doubled compared to 2008 and my business has seen some staggering growth! My body is also responding to all of the work and I had to make a chiropractor appointment… I think my shoulders are out of whack from being at my bench so much this summer. I have been still keeping up with orders, but generally slowing down my production for a few weeks.

Mike and I are going to be moving to town in the next month or so. We have loved living in our little cabin, but space and time are getting the best of us and we have found that it is time to move back into Marquette. I am very excited to have a whole room for a studio space rather than a one room house to do everything in. We have lived in two different one room houses since 2007, neither was bigger than 18X18 ft square. We are pretty confident we are going to rent a larger house close to downtown, walking distance from Bella Beads and most of the places I go in town.

I will be teaching many Silversmithing classes this month, please take a look at Bella Beads for more information.

Fall has started very abruptly in the last few days. We had our first fall frost on Thursday night and the entire garden had to be picked. We probably got 20lbs of tomatoes this year!

I have listed many new items in my Etsy Shop please take a look for any of your Christmas shopping needs!

Traveling bench around the United States

My Jewelry Bench

Jewelry Bench Early 2008 - Marquette, Michigan

The picture above is the first place I had my studio set up.  It was probably the biggest area I have had to work in since graduation college.  We had converted a corner of the kitchen to be my working area.  The lighting was always great for taking pictures too!  We have since moved out of this house into a log cabin in Big Bay, Michigan.

The picture above is my studio in the woods near Big Bay, Michigan.  This is the studio I had over the summer of 2008 and into the winter.  As you probably know, Mike and I left the cabin and are now on a 5 month journey around the United States.  We are attending various art shows and music festivals.

This is our pop-up camper and my bench set up in South Carolina.  Mike made me this fold-down bench when I first started doing shows in 2007.  It was a bit difficult to work in South Carolina in January!  There were only a few warm hours in the day.  We were staying with our friends father in South Carolina.  This was a good mid-way point before we arrived in Florida.

Finally in Florida!  This is my bench set up at the Covered Wagon Campground in Estero, Florida, just north of Bonita Springs.  We had many beautiful days to work, and the weather was very nice.  I picked up the large upright tool case at menards and it works really well to store all of my tools (accept my rolling mill and vices)  Then the shorter takle box on top of the table works great for supplies and metals.

This was the bench I set up in our rental cabin at the Miami Everglades Campground near Homestead, FL.  I was basically wedged between two sets of bunk beds, but it worked out just fine!

I will be setting my studio up again today at Mike’s aunts house.  I have a couple of custom pieces that I need to be working on and I also have to dig up a pendant that just sold from my Etsy Shop.

Jewelry Making in Florida!

I finally worked up the artistic energy to make some pieces of jewelry!  I have my studio set up outside and I am working on some silver tree pendants and some of the custom pieces I need to be working on.

Here are some pictures of me in my studio set up in the South West Florida!  Those aren’t my toys scattered about, they belong to Elaina!

How many studios can I set up; the life of a traveling jewelry artist.

Today I set up shop in the basement area of my friends Dads house for a few days. I like it, but am still trying to recover from a bit of a block… I thought setting up my tools might be a good way to feel like working.  I got everything situated, took a couple of pictures, then dinner was ready.  Mike and Traci make a wonderful Alfredo with broccoli, cauliflower and mushrooms.  It was totally yummy.

Anyway, the weather was mild this afternoon in rural South Carolina.  The sun came out and the temperature was in the high 50s.

I hope to post more pictures soon.  My hard drive is full, so I have to delete some of my unnecessary files!  I took a bunch of pictures yesterday, and somehow they got deleted while I was trying to upload them…

I ended up setting up my studio for a little while outside, here are some images!
